History of Schneider Electric
Schneider Electric has positioned itself as a global expert in energy management in its journey that began in 1836 and continues until today.
The journey, which started with the iron and steel industry, continued in the heavy machinery and shipbuilding sectors in the 19th century and was transferred to electricity and automation management in the 20th century. Leaving 170 years of history behind, Schneider Electric has now become a solution provider that promises more with your energy. Explore this transformation.
19th century
1836: The Schneider brothers take over the Creusot foundries (71), which were in trouble. Two years later they founded the Schneider & Cie company.
1891: Specializing in military equipment, Schneider decided to enter the emerging electricity market.
First half of the 20th century
1919: Schneider entered the German and Eastern European markets through the European Industrial and Financial Association (EIFU). In the years that followed, Schneider, together with Westinghouse, became a major international electrical group. The Group has expanded its field of activity by producing motors and equipment for power plants and electric locomotives.
Post-war: Schneider gradually moved away from arms and ammunition production and turned to electricity with construction, iron and steel works. The company has completely renewed its organizational structure in order to differentiate and expand into new markets.
Late 20th century
1981-1997: Schneider Electric continued to focus its attention on the electrical industry. With Telemecanique in 1988, Square D in 1991 and Merlin Gerin joining the Schneider Electric Group in 1992, the company established a prominent position in the electricity market.
1999: With the acquisition of Lexel, Europe\'s number 2 organization in electricity distribution, it started to operate in the field of electrical installation materials. In May 1999, the Group changed its company name to Schneider Electric to more clearly emphasize its expertise in the electrical field. The group focuses on accelerated growth and competitiveness strategy.
2000-2009: New segments in which Schneider Electric has a significant market share with organic growth: human-machine communication, UPS - uninterruptible power supply, motion control, Audio-Data-Video, Sensing Technology, Building Automation and security, (Digital , Crouzet, APC, Clipsal, MGE UPS Systems, TAC, Pelco, Xantrex, Andover Controls…).
